To explain the unexplainable, great seers and divine people wrote many stories on Lord Murugan. We need to read those stories but try to grasp the whole unexplainable concept and not abide by what is said in those stories!

Thaipoosam Cavadee day is a day of symbolic sacrifice. We need to apply that very sacrifice similarly to our daily life! Lord Murugan is a disciplined master in yoga. If you want to be his sincere devotee, you must follow his path, that is, that of wise discipline. I emphasize on the word 'wise' because one may say: " To try to smoke 17 cigarettes a day is my discipline. Every day I try to do it!" or:"I'm very strict in my life! We must not wear jeans, we must not watch TV, lest we will watch sensual issues..."
We must be really pragmatic/realistic in our life. It is true that jeans must not be worn! But this is not at the cost of being ostracized by society! In ceremonies, and cultural events, nice pants, kurtas or veshti should be worn. For girls, churidhars will be nice. There may be others that I am unaware of.
